‘Avatar’ Disc Sales Near 20 Million Units

James Cameron’s Avatar, the top grossing theatrical release in history, continues to impress at retail with combined sales of DVD and Blu-ray Disc units topping 19.7 million units, according to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Fox said Avatar, which was released April 22, has sold 6.2 million Blu-ray Discs, making the fantasy film the biggest selling high-definition format release in history.

The studio said consumers purchased a record 2.7 million Blu-ray units of Avatar in the first four days of the film's home entertainment release, making it both the fastest-selling Blu-ray Disc ever and the top-selling Blu-ray Disc of all time, period.

The previous record holder was Warner Home Video’s The Dark Knight, which has sold 2.5 million Blu-ray Disc units since its December 2008 release.
