By the end of 2016 more than half of American homes, or 63.1 million, will have some sort of DVR, according to a forecast by research firm Magna Global. That projection compares with 40.5 million homes, or 34.7% of TV households, at the end of the first quarter 2011.
Also by the end of 2016, Magna expects VOD and over-the-top video services to reach 71 million homes, or 57.7% of homes, compared with 53.3 million, or 45.6%, at the end of the first quarter.
DirecTV is leading the DVR pack among American pay-TV operators, with nearly 10 million, Magna estimates, with Dish Network close behind at nearly 8 million. Comcast has about 6.1 million, and Time Warner Cable has 4.7 million.
