Amazon Streaming Complete 'Transparent' Season for Free Jan. 2422 Jan, 2015 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Availability comes the same day Netflix gains access to Sony Pictures' controversial comedy ‘The Interview’
Amazon Jan. 22 announced it would stream for free — Jan. 24 only — all 10 episodes from the first season of Golden Globe-winning original comedy “Transparent,” starring Jeffrey Tambor, who also won for best actor in a comedy or musical series.
Anyone can watch “Transparent” using the Amazon Instant Video app for TVs, connected devices and mobile devices, or online at Amazon.com/Transparent.
“Transparent” and other Amazon Original Series are typically available only to Prime Instant Video members at $99 a year. In celebration of the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, Amazon Prime memberships will be available to new signees for $72.
“We’re incredibly proud of everyone involved in the making of ‘Transparent’ — the team took a risk and it paid off,” Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement. “Big kudos and congrats to Jill, Jeffrey and all the cast and crew.”
Availability of “Transparent” comes on the same day Netflix will begin streaming Sony Pictures' controversial comedy The Interview from Seth Rogen and co-starring James Franco — the first SVOD service to do so.
Separately, Sony-owned Crackle.com announced it would be the first ad-supported streaming site to offer The Interview, which made international headlines after cyber terrorists working for North Korea attacked Sony Pictures in advance of the movie’s planned Christmas Day theatrical launch.
