Easter Push Helps 'Hop' Jump Into Top Sales Spot

In its third week of release, Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s Hop finally topped the national home video sales charts, hopping to No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, for the week ended April 8.

The week ended with Easter, and Hop, which bowed at No. 3 and then rose to No. 2 its second week of release, is a movie about the Easter bunny that grossed $108.1 million at the box office.

Walt Disney Studios’ War Horse debuted at No. 2 on First Alert, but narrowly beat Hop to bow at No. 1 on Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart. The Steven Spielberg-directed historical drama, which earned $79.8 million in U.S. theaters, generated 36% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc, while the high-definition format accounted for just 30% of third-week sales for Hop. Even so, Hop sold nearly as many copies (98.4%) on Blu-ray Disc as War Horse, Nielsen data shows.

Twentieth Century Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, No. 1 on both sales charts the previous week, slipped to No. 3 on First Alert and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart its sophomore week in stores.

Rounding out the top five on First Alert are Fox’s We Bought a Zoo, which debuted at No. 4, and Walt Disney’s The Muppets, which finished the week at No. 5 (after falling from No. 1 to No. 3 the previous week). We Bought a Zoo also bowed at No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc chart, while The Muppets held fast at No. 3.

War Horse also debuted at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, with Fox’s Immortals, fresh off its 28-day rental moratorium from Redbox and Netflix, shooting up to No. 2 from No. 68 the previous week. Sony Pictures’ The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the top rental the previous two weeks, slipped to No. 3.
