Netflix Ups Layoffs, Implements Hiring Freeze

3 Nov, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Laid off workers reportedly are from human resources and customer support

Netflix has reportedly let go more than 100 employees in the human resources and customer service departments — the latter involved with the recently canceled Qwikster disc rental service. The Los Gatos, Calif.-based streaming pioneer also implemented a company-wide hiring freeze — the first in more than a year.

Netflix has in recent months seen its stock price plummet following a series of management missteps and a price hike to its most popular rental plan, among other issues.

The majority of layoffs in customer service occurred at Netflix’s main call center in Hillsboro, Ore. — many involved in training for the planned Qwikster DVD and Blu-ray Disc rental service, according to a report on HackingNetflix.com, which cited a source familiar with the situation. One online comment to the report suggested the layoffs topped 300. Netflix employs more than 2,000 people globally.

Bloomberg News originally reported layoffs of 15 people in human resources, in addition to a chief marketing officer position with Qwikster.

A Netflix representative was not immediately available for comment.
