Netflix Reaches 1 Million Subs in U.K., Ireland

20 Aug, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Netflix Aug. 20 said its subscription video-on-demand platform has reached 1 million members in the United Kingdom and Ireland since launching service in the region in January — the fastest subscriber growth in the company’s history.

By comparison, Netflix reached nearly 1 million subscribers in Canada after more than 10 months of service.

Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix said 10% of the U.K. population now dedicates two hours or more of their day to watching TV shows delivered through the Internet. Comedy and drama are the top genre choices among U.K. and Irish members, whose favorite time of the week to enjoy their streaming entertainment is on a Sunday night.

“This membership milestone is evidence that Netflix has rapidly gained popularity in the U.K. and Ireland," Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said in a statement. “Our British and Irish members clearly enjoy the ability to instantly watch a large variety of TV shows and films streaming from Netflix on their favorite devices whenever they want.”

Netflix recently said it would launch SVOD service in Scandinavia in the fourth quarter. It has more than 27 million combined streaming members in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, the U.K. and Ireland. Netflix also has 9.2 million disc subscribers, including 6.7 million who also stream content through a hybrid disc-streaming subscription program.
