Fox: ‘Star Wars’ No. 1 Blu-ray Catalog Title22 Sep, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey
In its first week the Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray Disc collection sold 1 million units worldwide — 515,000 of those in North America — generating $84 million ($38 million in North America), 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment announced Sept. 22.
The numbers make the title the No. 1 pre-order and No. 1 catalog Blu-ray title in the history of the format in terms of revenue, according to Fox.
“Star Wars is a franchise with universal stories that resonates as much today as it did 30 years ago,” said Mary Daily, EVP of marketing, and Vincent Marcais, SVP of international marketing for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
Fox launched a 13-month marketing campaign prior to the Sept. 16 launch, marketing the title at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, San Diego Comic-Con International and on eBay.
“Once again our fan’s enthusiasm to celebrate Stars Wars continues to amaze us,” said Kayleen Walters, senior director of marketing for Lucasfilm. “Our goal was to deliver a premium product that they could enjoy with their family and friends and we are thrilled that they are enjoying it as much as we hoped they would.”
