Dolby Ups Audio Quality on Blu-ray Disc

18 May, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Dolby Laboratories May 18 said enhancements to Dolby TrueHD, a lossless audio coding technology, can now replicate in the home movie audio playback typically found on the studio master recording.

Using advanced 96 kHz/24-bit audio on Blu-ray Discs, San Francisco-based Dolby says it can now help studios, authoring houses and mastering facilities deliver to consumers full-range, high-definition surround sound while also reducing the incidence of digitalartifacts that sometime occur during the content creation process.

Deluxe Digital Studios said an audio stream in a blind test using the advanced Dolby TrueHD coding technology proved to be superior than the original audio recording.

“Lossless audio is a key distinguishing feature of Blu-ray content,” said Craig Eggers, director, content creation and playback, home theater ecosystem with Dolby. “A significant amount of  Hollywood content has been captured in native 48 kHz. Studios … that implement Dolby TrueHD can elevate the quality of PCM audio [prior to encoding], ensuring that consumers get the very best audio performance possible from their Blu-ray playback system.”
