David Bishop, worldwide president, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Bishop has oversight of all global operations for the division, both physical and digital. As digital continues to grow, it is Bishop who must strike the balance between growing the prospects for collecting and owning digital movies, and supporting the physical-media business.
Bishop determines the overall strategy for SPHE’s digital content, including VOD, EST, digital delivery and cable/satellite platforms. Under Bishop’s leadership, digital and commercial innovation has become an integral part of SPHE, with the company ramping up its digital offerings by rolling out high-def EST, mobile apps and sophisticated digital movie extras to encourage consumers to buy and collect digital movies.
Mitch Singer, CTO and EVP, new media and technology, Sony Pictures Entertainment
Sony Pictures Entertainment relies on Singer for a lot of things. And lately the entire home entertainment industry has as well.
Besides coordinating digital policy across all Sony Pictures’ business, focusing on emerging technologies and developing new digital usage models for consumer content consumption, Singer also serves as president of DECE, the more than 60-member, cross-industry consortium introducing UltraViolet, a new open standard for digital entertainment distribution.
Singer also plays a central role in Sony’s worldwide antipiracy and digital rights management efforts, and plays a key role in negotiating the studio’s content protection technology licensing.
Chris Cookson, president, Sony Pictures Technologies, Sony Pictures Entertainment
Cookson sets technology strategy for the studio’s development and distribution of entertainment. He’s responsible for all the studio’s technology policies and processes. Cookson also serves as Sony Pictures’ liaison with other Sony Corp. technology businesses, and is the chief officer of the 3D Technology Center on the studio lot.
Lexine Wong, Senior EVP, worldwide marketing, SPHE
Consumer marketing is one of the key drivers to growing the digital business, and Wong’s team has years of experience in persuading and inspiring consumers to purchase physical goods, which has so far proved critical in driving transactions in the digital world, whether purchases of digital movies or VOD and pay-per-view rentals.
SPHE’s marketing group has been aggressively expanding its efforts in social media, mobile apps and interactive BD Live elements.
John Calkins, EVP, global digital and commercial innovation, SPHE
Calkins is responsible for the transactional exploitation of the studio’s properties worldwide across Internet, mobile, cable, satellite and telco platforms of distribution.
Additionally, for both the digital and physical channels of home entertainment distribution, Sony calls on Calkins to help ensure the price/value alignment of the overall mix of SPHE products as well as to oversee the division’s business affairs.
Before his current position, Calkins served as EVP of corporate development at Sony Pictures Entertainment. Prior to joining Sony, he was president of Warren N. Lieberfarb & Associates, and SVP of corporate business and strategy at Warner Bros., where we was instrumental in the creation of Movielink, the five-studio venture to distribute theatrically released films on the Internet.
Thanda Belker, EVP U.S. pay-TV, Sony Pictures Television and SPHE
Belker oversees hotel and residential PPV and VOD licensing and marketing activities, as well as pay-TV licensing and promotional efforts.
Her work includes bringing new products and windows to market on behalf of the studio, drawing from Sony’s extensive library of content.
Jason Spivak, SVP, worldwide digital distribution, SPHE
Spivak is responsible for the division’s worldwide transactional digital business. In his role he leads SPHE’s digital distribution team and manages account relationships with all digital service providers and retailers.
Before taking his current position, Spivak served as SPHE’s SVP of strategic development, and prior to that as VP of digital distribution. Spivak spent eight years at MGM Home Entertainment, leading that studio’s early digital distribution efforts, before joining Sony.
Richard Berger, SVP, global digital strategy and operations, SPHE
SPHE calls on Berger to focus on new digital usage models, applications and services that can help the studio increase the value of its digital media, and grow the overall digital business. Berger also is responsible for determining the value of new platforms and figuring out how to get the most value out of them for SPHE properties.
Prior to joining SPHE, Berger was SVP of new media and technology at Sony Pictures Entertainment, where he was one of the principal architects in creating the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE).
Spencer Stephens, SVP, technical services, Sony Pictures Technologies
Stephens is charged with the studio’s efforts to leverage technology to develop new distribution avenues for content, enhance post-production and expand Sony’s 3D efforts.
His main duties include the application of cloud-based production services, and Web and next-generation broadcast distribution for the studio. He’s the technical lead in content protection and is spearheading the implementation of the digital entertainment standard UltraViolet. As one of the studio’s senior technologists, he works with counterparts across Sony Corp.
Eric Berger, SVP, digital networks, Sony Pictures Television
To oversee Crackle.com, Sony Picture Entertainment’s premium online video network, Sony Pictures Television turns to Berger.
He’s responsible for content development and programming, marketing and distribution for Crackle, and manages day-to-day operations of the digital networks group. He’s charged with Crackle’s product, video operations, programming, engineering and multiplatform distribution for original series, TV shows and films.
