comScore: Consumer Electronics Tops in Online Spending

American online spending from April to June was down for the third straight quarter but was up 14% year-over-year, while spending on consumer electronics was up at least 15%, according to new data from online research firm comScore.
Sales by small and mid-sized retailers mostly were negligible, as the top 25 online retailers accounted for two-thirds of all sales. Seventy percent of all Internet users made at least one online purchase during the quarter.
“The second quarter of 2011 saw a continuation of this year’s solid double-digit growth trends in online spending, well ahead of the rate of growth in consumers’ overall spending,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. “As a result, it’s clear that consumers are continuing to shift to the online channel, with almost $1 in every $10 of discretionary spending now occurring online.”
