Broadcast Critics Name Top 5 Blu-rays

26 Sep, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey

The Broadcast Film Critics Association, the largest film critics’ organization in the United States and Canada, has released its inaugural list of the top Blu-ray Disc titles during the first five years of the format.

The top titles by year are:

• 2006/2007: Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition
• 2008: 40-Year Evolution of Planet of the Apes
• 2009: Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Edition
• 2010: Tie between Francis Ford Coppola Presents Apocalypse Now and Avatar
• 2011: The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy

The association chose the titles based on the treatment and presentation of the films on Blu-ray, not on box office or retail performance. Picture and audio quality, artistic merit of the film, and use of Blu-ray capacity and connectivity all were considered.

“The BFCA is proud to participate in this milestone anniversary in the history of the Blu-ray disc format,” said BFCA president Joey Berlin. “This voting process [enabled] our members to use their critical prowess to alert the viewing public to a wide spectrum of motion picture achievement enhanced through the prism of this exciting technology.”
