Report: Apple Leading Connected TV Market

14 Dec, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey

By the end of 2011, Apple will own a 32% share of the connected TV player market, according to research from Strategy Analytics, with the company’s Apple TV device accounting for nearly 4 million of the nearly 12 million Internet TV set-top devices shipped globally by year’s end.

That 12 million figure is nearly double the connected TV player figure from 2010. Strategy Analytics also reports that 8% of U.S. households now own a connected TV player, compared with 7% of European households.

“Apple is leading this nascent market, which it still considers a ‘hobby,’” said Jia Wu, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics. “As Apple prepares for its expected launch of smart TVs in 2012, rival platforms must accelerate their development plans to keep Apple from running away with the connected TV business, as it has done in smartphones and digital music.”

The report also found that Apple TV users spend more money on movies and TV shows than owners of other devices (30%, compared with 20%).
