3DTV Panel Shipments Up 27% in Q322 Nov, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Shipments of 3D LCD television panels topped 6.6 million units in the third quarter — a 27% increase from the previous-year period, according to new data from NPD DisplayResearch.
The Santa Clara, Calif.-based subsidiary of The NPD Group said shipments of pattern retarder-type and shutter glass-type screens increased 34% and 23%, respectively. Despite the flat overall LCD TV panel shipments in Q3, unit shipments are expected to increase 30% in the fourth quarter, with 3D LCD TV market penetration projected to reach 10%, or 21.5 million units, by the end of the year.
The research firm cited increased consumer awareness and more aggressive promotions by retailers and manufacturers for the uptick. Indeed, 3D LCD TV market is projected to reach 20% by the third quarter 2012.
“While there are still many questions about the lack of 3D content and services, as well as end-users’ needs, LCD TV panel makers have been strongly promoting 3D through lower prices and the introduction of new, cost-effective technologies,” noted David Hsieh, VP, greater China market for NPD DisplaySearch.
Meanwhile, unit shipments of LCD TV panels are expected to surge 30% in the fourth quarter.
