'Game of Thrones' Getting Imax Release

6 Jan, 2015 By: Erik Gruenwedel

HBO will screen select episodes of its popular “Game of Thrones” cable series on Imax — the first time a television series will appear on the large-format theatrical screen.

The final two episodes of the fourth season, the show's most recent, will be released to 150 Imax screens nationwide Jan. 23-29. The screening will include a special trailer for upcoming fifth season.

"Thrones" remains a ratings, home entertainment (and pirated) blockbuster for HBO, and figures likely be a draw for the pay-TV network’s pending over-the-top video service slated to launch in the second quarter.

Game of Thrones: The Complete Fourth Season will be released on Blu-ray Disc with Digital Copy Feb. 17 for $79.98 SRP.

Indeed, Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season won three trophies — Best Current Series, Best AV Quality TV and Best Fantasy Disc — at the fourth annual Home Media Magazine Awards, which honored the best DVDs and Blu-ray Discs of 2013.

The fifth season of “Thrones” debuts in April on HBO.

UPDATE (1-14-15): HBO announced it has pushed the Imax screenings of "Game of Thrones" back a week to Jan. 29 through Feb. 5, to allow for an expanded rollout of 200 screens to accomodate fan demand.
