Lionsgate: ‘Dredd’ Top-Selling New Release of the Year

22 Jan, 2013 By: Erik Gruenwedel

2013 may only be three weeks old, but that’s enough time for post-apocalyptic thriller Dredd to rank the No. 1 home entertainment movie released this year, according to Lionsgate.

According to Lionsgate, the movie has sold 650,000 discs since its Jan. 8 retail release, with around 50% of its sales on Blu-ray. It is also the top-selling digital release of the year.

Dredd stars Karl Urban (Star Trek), Lena Headey (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), Olivia Thirlby (Juno) and Wood Harris. It generated $13.4 million at the domestic box office.

“Dredd’s performance demonstrates the breadth of the home entertainment audience for this exciting, high-caliber film as well as underscoring our ability to monetize theatrical titles across all home entertainment platforms through the highest packaged, VOD and digital conversion rates in the industry," said Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate's EVP and GM of home entertainment. "We're also pleased that a film released on 3D Blu-ray was able to top the sales charts, a clear reflection of how quality films in this up-and-coming format can find their audience."

Santa Monica, Calif.-based Lionsgate, which is riding a wave of success with "The Twilight Saga" and "Hunger Games" franchises, reports third-quarter fiscal results Feb. 11.

According to Nielsen’s VideoScan tracking service, Dredd has actually sold fewer copies this year than Sony Pictures’ Looper, which was released on Dec. 31 and thus is technically not a 2013 new release.
