Starz Ups Q1 Home Video Revenue 32%9 May, 2013 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Premium television channel Starz LLC May 9 said first-quarter (ended March 31) sales of home video product of original programming topped $49.8 million, which was up 32% from $37.7 million in sales during the previous-year period.
During the quarter, Starz secured a home video distribution agreement at Anchor Bay Entertainment with AMC Networks for original programming from AMC, IFC and Sundance Channel.
Top-selling home entertainment titles included the final season of the “Spartacus” franchise and “Magic City.” Future Starz Originals home entertainment releases include “DaVinci’s Demons,” “White Queen” and “Black Sails” — the prequel to Treasure Island.
Meanwhile, revenue decreased 1% to $399 million primarily due to the non-renewal of a license agreement with Netflix, in addition to the renewal of affiliation agreements with two TV distributors on less favorable financial terms than the prior affiliation agreements. Operating income decreased 13% to $105 million.
