ABC Begins Streaming on Hulu7 Jul, 2009 By: Isabella Hecht
After signing a deal with Hulu at the end of April, ABC Enterprises, a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Co., has begun streaming full episodes of their shows on Hulu.com. Hulu visitors can now watch recent episodes of popular shows “Desperate Housewives” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” and will soon be able to watch such shows as “Lost,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Scrubs,” “Ugly Betty” and more.
Hulu is one of the most popular video sites on the Web, showing free, high-quality TV shows, supported by advertisements. While most of the network’s shows will still be available on ABC.com, distribution on Hulu will earn a much larger audience, with Hulu’s claimed 42 million viewers a month.
Disney is now the third of the four big broadcasting companies to own stakes in Hulu, joining NBC Universal (owned by General Electric and Vivendi) and Fox (owned by News Corp.). The only major broadcasting network without a seat at Hulu is now CBS, which streams on TV.com. Also isolated by the deal is YouTube, owned by Google, the largest video site on the Web, which had also courted Disney.
