Fox Releasing 3D 'Avatar' Blu-ray at Retail14 Aug, 2012 By: John Latchem
The film that revolutionized 3D in theaters is finally receiving a proper 3D release on Blu-ray Disc. Avatar: 3D Blu-ray Collector’s Edition releases globally Oct. 15, and in North America Oct. 16, at $39.99 from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
Director James Cameron announced the 3D release via a video posted to the Avatar Facebook page Aug. 13. As a bonus for fans, the video also included a recruitment film for the RDA forces on Pandora, the fictional world that provides the setting for the film.
“3D television is the future of home entertainment,” Cameron said. “I’m a huge proponent of the technology and very pleased that Avatar can be viewed in the living room the way it is meant to be seen.”
The two-disc set will include a Blu-ray Disc with both the 2D and 3D versions of the film, as well as a 2D version on DVD. It is not yet clear which extras, if any, will be included.
In theaters, Avatar earned $2.78 billion worldwide and $760.51 million domestically en route to becoming the all-time box office earner, unadjusted for inflation.
A standalone 3D Blu-ray version of Avatar was previously available as a mail-away exclusive with the purchase of Panasonic 3D Blu-ray players and other products. Copies of the Panasonic exclusive have been listed on secondary market sites such as Amazon Marketplace and eBay for more than $100.
