Nielsen: 115.6 Million American TV Homes

Nielsen estimates there are now 115.6 million American homes with TVs, up 1.2% year-over-year. That represents 294 million people ages 2 or older living in TV households, up 1.6%, according to the report.

The report uses data from the U.S. Census Bureau, state and local governments, as well as the number of homes that have broadband connections, a first for Nielsen in determining the number of homes that have TVs.

“This year, the Advance National TV UEs [Universe Estimate] are as we expected,” said Pat McDonough, SVP of insights and analysis for Nielsen. “Though we see slight shifts reflecting trends in population changes, the Advance UEs are largely stable and television viewing remains very strong.

“The expansion of the definition of a TV household, which we announced in February 2013, will include viewing from additional sites in current homes and new homes for the September TV season,” McDonough continued. “In collaboration with clients, we continue to expand the reach of television audience measurement — how and where consumers choose to view content.”
