Disney Partners With LG Offering 3D Movie Rentals5 Oct, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel
In a potential boost to 3DTV, Walt Disney Studios has joined LG offering new-release, classic, Touchstone Pictures, Pixar and Marvel movies for rent in the high-definition format on the consumer electronics manufacturer’s enabled connected televisions.
Using the LG 3D World App embedded on a series of connected TVs, users can rent Disney titles such as Marvel’s The Avengers, Pixar’s Brave, Toy Story, John Carter, G-Force, Tangled, Alice in Wonderland and future theatrical releases Wreck-it Ralph, Oz: The Great and Powerful and James Cameron’s Ghosts of the Abyss, among others. New titles are added each week, in addition to a portfolio of more than 300 free non-Disney 3D content, including documentaries, entertainment, kids, lifestyle and sports.
For a limited time, LG is offering a $50 credit for up to 10 movie rentals in LG 3D World with the purchase of a 3D-enabled smart TV. Qualifying models include 47-, 55- and 65-inch screen sizes of the LM6200 LG Cinema 3DTVs.
The app is available via the “home dashboard” on 3D-enabled LG Smart TVs. Users enter 3D World by pressing the home button on the remote control. The intuitive user interface allows the user to browse titles in a 3D layout.
“Providing consumers with the latest blockbuster hits from Disney is another boost for Smart TV in the home and a perfect fit for our family approach to enjoying our home entertainment products,” James Fisher, SVP of marketing and go-to operations with LG Electronics USA, said in a statement.
Fisher added that Disney rental titles should be a catalyst for families considering a 3DTV purchase and can act as conduit to other 3D content, including video games, third-party applications and TV broadcasts.
