Insight Media to Host 4K Symposium

Insight Media, in conjunction with the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers (SMPTE), will hold an Ultra HD symposium Oct. 21, featuring technical and business discussions about 4K sets and video.

The full-day event at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood, Calif., will be split into two tracks.

The technical track will be led by Skip Pizzi, director of digital strategies for the National Association of Broadcasters, and will cover discussions on higher frame rates, wider color gamut and increased dynamic range for image formats.

The business track will be led by Chris Chinnock, president and founder of Insight Media, and will cover the business, investment and return on investment issues surrounding the broader adoption of 4K equipment and content in both the consumer and professional markets.

Running in conjunction with the 4K discussions will be a Ultra HD demonstration area, running Oct. 21 to 23 as part of the SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition. Demonstrations will include the showcasing of image processing and scaling engines, and their ability to produce 4K content from lower-res sources.

“The SMPTE 4K/UHD Symposium will break new ground in a couple of key areas,” said conference co-organizer Chris Chinnock, president of Insight Media. “In addition to the timely focus on 4K/UHD, the symposium includes a business track which will provide a much better understanding of the drivers behind commercialization of 4K in consumer and professional markets. The 4K/UHD demo area is also new and state-of-the-art featuring 12 UHD displays showcasing up-conversion and HEVC compression demos in side-by-side demonstrations using a specially prepared demo reel.”
