Best Buy Selling $39.99 Toshiba Blu-ray Player on Black Friday

15 Nov, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Consumer electronics retailer follows Walmart’s lead offering sub-$40 BD player and current-release movies and TV shows on Blu-ray for $8

Best Buy Co. will offer a Toshiba Blu-ray Disc for $39.99 on Black Friday — a price point that nearly identical to Walmart, which said it would offer a LG Blu-ray player Thanksgiving evening for $38.99. Best Buy is opening store doors at 12 a.m. on Nov. 23.

The Wi-Fi Toshiba player includes apps for Netflix streaming, Pandora and Hulu Plus, which all require separate subscriptions. Best Buy also is selling a LG 3D Blu-ray player with Netflix and YouTube apps online only.

Interestingly, Walmart made news five years ago when it offered the first sub-$300 Blu-ray player on Black Friday.

Best Buy, which has a new CEO and has streamlined its internal business structure from eight divisions to three, is selling The Hunger Games on Blu-ray, AMC Networks’ series Breaking Bad: The Complete Fourth Season on DVD and The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Fifth Season for $8.99 each.

Best Buy Nov. 13, during an analyst day, said it would focus on completing consumer store sales online, if necessary, in addition to empowering its Blue Shirt staff with more leeway in sales and service options entering the winter holiday retail season.

The chain on Black Friday is also selling 50 assorted movie DVDs, including Batman Begins and The Social Network, for $1.99 each, and another 140 titles such as The Lorax and Super 8 for $3.99 each. It is selling 50 Blu-ray titles such as Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Wrath of the Titans for $3.99 each. Another 110 more recent BD titles, such as Snow White & The Huntsman: Extended Edition and Captain America: The First Avenger, will retail for $7.99 each.
