Amazon Greenlights Children’s Series Pilot

6 Mar, 2013 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Amazon Studios March 6 said it has approved production of a pilot for an animated children’s series co-produced by the creative teams behind the popular “Blue’s Clues,” “Arthur” and “Curious George” TV shows.

The episode, “Sara Solves It,” brings to 12 pilots (six comedies and six children’s shows) Amazon has approved for production to be streamed for free on Amazon Prime Instant Video, transactional video-on-demand service Amazon Instant Video and Amazon-owned LoveFilm Instant in the United Kingdom and Germany. Pilots that register the strongest feedback will be given full series productions.

“Sara Solves It” is created by Emmy winner Carol Greenwald (“Curious George,” “Arthur,” “Martha Speaks”) and Emmy nominee Angela C. Santomero (“Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood,” “Super Why!,” “Blue’s Clues”). They are also co-executive producers of the pilot.

“Sara” follows brother and sister, Sara and Sam, as they try comprehending mysteries that spring from the encounters in their daily lives. Each mystery is an interactive, math-based puzzle that the home viewer can solve along with the characters.

Amazon Prime Instant Video is considered the biggest competitor to Netflix’s streaming service. In addition to outbidding Netflix for exclusive SVOD access to PBS series “Downton Abbey,” FX’s “Justified” and CBS’ midseason series, “Under the Dome,” Amazon is aggressively seeking to up content aimed at Netflix’s “Just for Kids” section.
