NPD: June Video Game Sales Rise 18%

16 Jul, 2015 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Buoyed by increases in hardware, software and accessories, total video game sales in June increased 18% to $869.4 million, compared with $735 million during the prior-year period, according to new data from The NPD Group.

Hardware sales of new-generation consoles increased 8% to $313 million (from $291 million), while software sales rose 21% to $345.5 million, from $286.5 million. Accessories shot up 34% to $211 million, from $157 million a year ago.

“Eighth-generation consoles are leading the way with 15% growth over June 2014, offsetting declines in seventh-generation and portable hardware sales,” analyst Liam Callahan said in a statement.

New-release title sales increased 19% over June 2014 — the fourth month of year-over-year increases in 2015. Through the first half of the year, software sales are up 3%.

“With a strong lineup of games for the remainder of the year, there is the potential for a positive growth in the second half of the year as well,” Callahan said.

Batman: Arkham Knight was the No. 1 selling game in June, and also the second-highest-selling game so far in 2015 after Mortal Kombat X. NPD said if sales included hardware bundles, Arkham Knight would be the best-selling game of the year thus far.
