With HBO launching an OTT service next year, direct access via Xbox could help spur subscription sales
HBO Nov. 20 announced it has made available to Xbox One the HBO Go streaming platform that enables authenticated viewers to access HBO programing on demand via connected devices.
HBO Go on Xbox One features Kinect voice and gesture control so users can search the entire content catalog with the wave of a hand or quick voice command.
“Xbox is one of our subscribers’ favorite ways to access HBO Go,” Jeff Dallesandro, VP of digital domestic network distribution for HBO, said in a statement.
While HBO Go has been available on Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 for several months, attachment to Xbox One (and PS4) remained a work in progress.
With HBO set to launch a standalone over-the-top video service (separate from HBO Go) early next year, getting Xbox One and PS4 on board would seem key priorities.
Along with Netflix, HBO Go remains the go-to benchmark for TV Everywhere streaming software.
“Now, Xbox One users can get in on the action and Kinect with the very best HBO series and films on this innovative, state-of-the-art device,” Dallesandro said.
