Redbox Testing Higher Pricing

27 Sep, 2017 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Redbox is testing higher rental pricing in select markets, including the Detroit metro area, according to a source.

The nation’s largest DVD/Blu-ray Disc rental service is marketing DVD rentals for $1.75 per day — 17% above the standard $1.50 price, and $2.25 for Blu-ray — 12.5% above the standard price.

A quick scan of Redbox’s website finds Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s Wonder Woman is available for the standard $1.50 DVD and $2 Blu-ray.

Redbox in late 2014 raised the price of a nightly DVD rental 25% and 33% for Blu-ray. It raised the price of a video game rental 50% in early 2015.

A representative said Redbox tests price elasticity of demand as part of its regular course of business.

“No plans have been made to expand the test or to change pricing permanently,” said the rep.
