Redbox, Lionsgate Unveil New Day-and-Date Distribution Deal

Redbox and Lionsgate Aug. 14 announced a new distribution deal affording the kiosk vendor access to new-release Lionsgate DVD and Blu-ray Disc titles the same day as retail sellthrough dates.
Lionsgate’s deal with Redbox was previously renewed in 2014.
“Lionsgate has consistently shared our commitment to making content accessible to consumers," Galen Smith, CEO of Redbox, said in a statement.
“Redbox is a longstanding and valued partner,” said Ron Schwartz, president of home entertainment at Lionsgate. “We are pleased to extend our relationship with them and remain committed to delivering a broad portfolio of premium content across an ever-expanding array of linear and digital platforms.”
Redbox recently renewed deals with Warner and Fox gaining access to new movies seven days after retail release, a shorter window than the 28-day delay previously stipulated by those studios. With packaged-media retail slowing, studios are rethinking rental embargoes. Only Universal continues to impose the month-long rental embargo on its major new releases.
