Industry veteran most recently spearheaded content acquisitions for Gaiam TV
Online video service Vimeo April 1 said it has hired Sam Toles as VP of content acquisitions and business development.
Toles will be charged with expanding content offerings and revenue growth for Vimeo’s direct film distribution platform, Vimeo on Demand.
Vimeo on Demand launched in March 2013 and now includes more than 5,000 films, with the filmmakers setting prices, geographic availability and viewing formats.
Toles, an 18-year veteran, previously held the VP of content strategy position with Gaiam Entertainment, including Gaiam TV. Gaiam sold its entertainment unit, Gaiam Vivendi, last year to Cinedigm.
Vimeo in January picked up 13 films from the Toronto International Film Festival, all of which make their exclusive digital debut via VOD in 2014.
“[Toles’] background aligns perfectly with Vimeo’s promise to empower professional creators to distribute content directly to audiences worldwide by offering open access, powerful tools, total control and better economics for earning money from premium content,” Greg Clayman, GM of audience development, said in a statement.
