17 Nov, 2015 By: Erik Gruenwedel

‘American Sniper,’ ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ among new digital movies available in ultra high-definition format

Walmart-owned Vudu Nov. 17 announced nine more Warner Bros. movies are now available digitally in 4K ultra high-definition resolution. It also announced a pact with Dolby Laboratories that enables consumers to experience the remastered movies on televisions featuring Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

Dolby Vision claims to offer high-dynamic-range technology that, compared to standard-definition, can deliver brighter highlights and more light-to-dark contrast. Dolby Atmos-enabled home theater products are said to allow sound to move around the room in a three-dimensional way in order to create a more immersive and emotive soundscape and experience.

4K UHD resolution claims to have four times the clarity of 1080p.

The new 4K movies include Mad Max: Fury Road, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Gallows, American Sniper, Vacation, Get Hard and The Hangover Trilogy. Previously-announced 4K remastered titles included San Andreas, Man of Steel, Edge of Tomorrow, The Lego Movie, Magic Mike XXL, Jupiter Ascending, Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Great Gatsby, Into the Storm, Focus and Run All Night.

The movies can be downloaded for $24.99 or rented for $9.99, the latter for a 48-hour window.

“With our titles remastered in 4K Ultra HD … we know that we are giving our customers a true-to-life film experience that engages them in a dramatically enhanced visual and audio experience,” Jim Wuthrich, president of the Americas for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, said in a statement.

“We were at the forefront of high-definition digital video with our HDX format, and now, by offering movies with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, we’re again giving customers the opportunity to enjoy a premium visual and audio experience,” said Scott Blanksteen, VP of product for Vudu.
