PlayOn Bows Redbox Instant Link

27 Mar, 2013 By: Erik Gruenwedel

PlayOn, which allows users to stream content from sites like Hulu, HBO Go and Comedy Central via the PC to the TV and mobile devices, has added Redbox Instant by Verizon to its portfolio.

Seattle-based PlayOn March 27 said it is the only third-party software for accessing Redbox Instant on gaming consoles and streaming devices other than the Xbox 360, such as Roku, PlayStation 3, Wii, Wii U, Google TV, Apple TV via AirPlay and all other DLNA-compliant devices.

Specifically, PlayOn helps convert videos from the PC to HTML 5 for devices unable to accommodate Flash and Silverlight formats. Users must subscribe to Redbox Instant to access the content via PlayOn’s Redbox Instant Channel. A lifetime subscription to PlayOn is available for $49.99; annual subscriptions cost $24.99 a year.

“PlayOn aims to provide users with as much accessibility to streamed media as possible,” Jeff Lawrence, CEO of PlayOn parent MediaMall Technologies, said in a statement. “With [the channel], streaming media freedom is placed in the hands of the user. People will no longer be restricted to the type of device they use to access Redbox Instant.”
