Warner Archive Begins Offering Blu-ray15 Nov, 2012 By: Chris Tribbey
Warner Archive Collection (WAC), the manufacture-on-demand (MOD) DVD program the studio launched in early 2009, will begin offering films on Blu-ray Disc later this month, a first among studio MOD programs.
The 1982 thriller Deathtrap, starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve, and the 1962 musical Gypsy will be available on Blu-ray starting Nov. 20. Warner Archive plans on offering one to two new Blu-ray films per month beginning in February 2013. The Hudsucker Proxy, starring Tim Robbins and Paul Newman, and the 1993 Jeff Bridges film Fearless are confirmed as future WAC Blu-ray offerings.
WAC Blu-ray titles will be priced at $21.99.
“This is an important innovation that fulfills consumer demand for high-definition releases that otherwise would not be available in physical formats,” said Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to further expand the Warner Archive Collection into the Blu-ray marketplace with an impressive slate of releases.”
Blu-rays offered through WAC will be replicated in limited quantities. In some instances, as with Deathtrap, the films will be released in their original widescreen format.
Since its launch, WAC has made available more than 1,500 films, short subjects, TV movies and mini-series that wouldn’t see a wide release at retail.
