Netflix Bows Content-Download Option

30 Nov, 2016 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Netflix Nov. 30 announced it is giving subscribers the ability to download movies and TV shows for offline viewing.

The new feature, which involves clicking a download button on applicable content, is included in all plans and available for mobile phones and tablets on Android and iOS.

In a blog post, Ed Wu, director of product innovation, said Netflix original series such as “Orange Is The New Black,” “Narcos” and “The Crown” are available for download today.

The download option, which Netflix CEO Reed Hastings appeared amenable to earlier this year in a fiscal call, is largely dependent upon license rights. Enabling subscribers to download content could undercut content holders’ ability to monetize movies and TV shows in separate distribution channels, including transactional VOD and packaged media.

As a result, content available for download will likely encompass Netflix original programming versus third-party.

“We should keep an open mind on this. We’ve been so focused on click-and-watch and the beauty and simplicity of streaming. But as we expand around the world, where we see an uneven set of networks, it’s something we should keep an open mind about,” Hastings said in April.
