Google Play Offering 4K UHD Movies

6 Dec, 2016 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Google Dec. 6 announced its rebranded Google Play Movies & TV platform is now selling access to 125 movies in 4K Ultra HD resolution. The titles can be purchased on Android devices or the Web.

The platform is giving a free 4K UHD catalog title with the purchase of a Chromecast Ultra streaming media device. Google Play Movies also added support for iOS devices, Roku and select smart TVs, including Samsung.

In October, Google also bowed the Daydream VR platform, which enables users with Daydream VR headwear to watch movies and TV shows in the Google Play library in virtual reality.

“When we first made movies available five years ago, they were only available on Android devices in the U.S., and you could only rent from three major studios,” Ben Serridge, product manager for Google Play Movies & TV, wrote in a blog post. “Today, GPMT … is available in 117 countries.”
