Delta Touts 'The Avengers' for August In-Flight Viewing29 May, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Delta Airlines during the Memorial Day weekend ran in-flight TV spots announcing it would make available, "The Avengers," to passengers for on-demand viewing beginning in August — at least month before the theatrical blockbuster’s Sept. 25 retail release date.
The spot, which appeared on a flight from Atlanta to Santa Ana, Calif., showed a video clip and still of the movie with the tag line, “Coming to Delta in August.” On-demand movies on Delta, which rent for $6 per title, are free to business, first class and “economy comfort” cabins, and for customers in the economy cabin on all international flights.
The Avengers (Disney/Marvel) has grossed more than $523 million at the domestic box office ($1.3 billion globally) since its May 4 release. It is the fastest movie in history (in 10 days) to reach $1 billion in ticket sales.
The title, along with The Hunger Games (Lionsgate), is expected to be one of the top-selling home entertainment releases in the fourth quarter.
A Delta spokesperson wasn’t certain of The Avengers’ exact “air” date. Representatives from American Airlines and United Airlines were checking on the film’s availability for in-flight viewing.
