Vdio Bows Transactional VOD, Sellthrough Movie Site3 Apr, 2013 By: Erik Gruenwedel
A new movie service called “Vdio” offering transactional video-on-demand and electronic sellthrough, has launched from Skype co-founder Janus Friis.
Content providers include most major studios and some broadcasters.
First announced in 2011 as a beta test for a possible subscription VOD platform earmarked to take on Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime Instant Video, Vdio now appears resigned to joining a crowded field of digital platforms all selling movies and TV shows at identical price points.
The new service, which has offices in Santa Monica, Calif., and Europe, is headed by CEO Ian Aaron.
Vido is currently available only to subscribers of Rdio, the music service Friis launched in 2010 in the United Kingdom and United States. Content can be streamed with a Web browser as well as an iPad app, the latter reportedly only allowing users to view — not purchase — content.
