Sony Blu-ray Disc Players, TVs Get Tubi TV App

Sony Electronics April 11 announced an app agreement with Tubi TV, an ad-supported over-the-top video service. The platform’s app will now be included in Sony Smart TVs and Sony Blu-ray Disc players globally.

As part of the pact, Tubi TV will be highlighted on Sony's homepage menu of featured apps as well as all other Sony connected devices dating back to 2012.

Launched in 2014, Tubi TV has license deals with more than 200 content partners, including Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount Pictures, Starz and The Weinstein Co.

The service features more than 40,000 videos, including Oscar-winning movies, Emmy-winning TV shows, classics, family and kids programming, telenovelas, Korean dramas, stand-up comedy and horror, among others.

“Millions of Sony customers now have free access to Tubi TV's massive collection of premium content — a welcome addition to their full complement of entertainment options,” Nick Colsey, VP of business development at Sony Electronics, said in a statement.

According to a study released in late 2016 by cg42, pay-TV providers are forecasted to lose nearly $1 billion in annual revenue as an estimated 800,000 customers nationwide cut their cable bill.

Meanwhile, smart-TV viewing grew by more than 65% in 2016, according to Pivotal Research. Additionally, more than 37 million U.S. households watched ad-supported shows on connected TVs in 2016, according to Modi Media, an ad buying division of GroupM focused on new TV advertising.

“With the number of smart-TV users in the U.S. estimated to reach 190 million in 2017, we see tremendous opportunities for snowballing growth as viewers increasingly gravitate towards new ways of consuming entertainment. Having our streaming app on Sony TVs Powered by Android TV Sony Smart TVs and Sony Blu-ray players is a big step in that direction,” said Tubi TV founder/CEO Farhad Massoudi.
