Platforms selling original TV series from Lionsgate and Starz

Vimeo, an online video platform for filmmakers, Oct. 18 debuted a global digital storefront in 150 countries, offering select original TV series from Lionsgate and Starz, priced from $7.99 per season.

Content includes series “Orange Is the New Black,” “Casual,” “The Royals,” “Mad Men,” “Manhattan,” “Nurse Jackie,” “Blue Mountain State,” “Greenleaf” and “Weeds,” among others. In the coming weeks, Starz will offer original series “The Girlfriend Experience,” horror-comedy “Ash vs. Evil Dead” and “Black Sails.”

“As audiences across the globe continue to shift toward online viewing, Vimeo is taking a leadership role, establishing our 'on-demand' storefront as the world’s first transactional [VOD] service to offer premium television on a truly global basis,” Sam Toles, SVP of programming at Vimeo, said in a statement.

Toles, together with Jim Packer, president of worldwide television and digital distribution at Lionsgate, made the announcement at the MIPCOM 2016 Global Market confab in Cannes, France.

First disclosed last month, Lionsgate eyes Vimeo among other global digital distribution channels for proprietary TV shows made famous by Netflix, AMC Networks, Showtime and HBO, among others.

“Platforms such as Vimeo … are transforming the face of entertainment and bringing our content to consumers around the world through an expanding array of touch-points,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said in September.

The Santa Monica, Calif.-based studio/distributor is securing regulatory approval of its $4.4 billion acquisition of Starz.
