New Sony PS4 Pro Console Won't Play 4K Blu-ray Disc

New console features 4K resolution and HDR streaming video

As expected, Sony Interactive Entertainment Sept. 7 formally announced the pending (Nov. 10) launch of the upgraded PlayStation 4 — called PS4 Pro. Previous media reports dubbed it “PS4 Neo.”

The $399 console will feature a 1TB hard drive, faster processor and improved graphics. It will also offer 4K Ultra HD resolution and high dynamic range (HDR) streaming video playback.

The Pro will not support 4K Blu-ray Disc playback, while still accepting standard Blu-ray and DVD discs — similarly to the PS4.

"PS4 Pro is not intended to blur the line between console generations; instead, the vision is to take the PS4 experience to extraordinary new levels,” Sony’s Mark Cerny told attendees at the PlayStation Meeting in New York.

Indeed, to watch Ultra HD content requires a 4K-compatible HDTV. For those sticking with a 1080p HDTV, a less-expensive ($299) yet upgraded (and smaller) PS4 console launches Sept. 15.
