Lionsgate Oct. 10 announced a five-movie theatrical distribution agreement with Viacom18 Motion Pictures, a Mumbai, India-based multiplatform joint venture between Viacom and the Network18 Group.
Movies include big-budget actioner Deepwater Horizon, Nerve, December releases La La Land and Patriots Day, and Power Rangers, opening March 24, 2017.
“This is a territory with tremendous box office potential, and we expect these five eagerly-anticipated films to resonate with Indian moviegoers all year long,” Wendy Reed, EVP of international sales at Lionsgate, said in a statement.
In addition to mainstream Hollywood fare, Viacom18 distributes regional content across languages such as Bengali, Marathi and Punjabi, among others.
Lionsgate continues to expand distribution globally, including partnering with Univision for a Spanish-language subscription streaming service.
In May, Globalgate, an international local-language joint venture with Lionsgate, named Meg Thomson VP of worldwide content. Thomson was previously managing director with Echo Remakes, overseeing global rights to local-language films.
