MovieStop Buying UltraViolet Codes, DVDs From New Blu-ray Combo Packs
15 Jan, 2016 By: Erik GruenwedelMovieStop, the Atlanta-based buy, sell, trade packaged media/entertainment trend retail chain, is offering to buy back DVDs and UltraViolet codes included in new Blu-ray Disc combo packs.
The retailer is offering $4 for DVDs and $2 for UltraViolet codes — the latter giving registered users digital access to a cloud-based file of the content. The repurchase program is for new releases only and within a two-week period after street date.
UltraViolet allows users to share content access with up to five additional people on compatible devices. UltraViolet is deployed by the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem, a consortium of 85 companies, including studios, retailers, consumer electronics manufacturers, cable TV operators, Internet Service Providers, network hosting vendors, and other Internet systems and security vendors.
MovieStop, which was acquired in 2014 by Draw Another Circle LLC, owner of Amarillo, Texas-based retail chain Hastings Entertainment, is not repurchasing standalone UltraViolet codes from previously-purchased Blu-ray releases due to their operational concerns, according to store personnel.
“We have no way of determining in the store whether those codes work,” said a manager.
