'12 Years a Slave' Atop British Video Sales Charts

Three-time Oscar winner bumps perennial chart topper 'Frozen' into the third spot in its retail debut
Oscar winner 12 Years a Slave, directed by Steve McQueen and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, finished atop the British video sales charts through May 17, selling more than 196,000 discs in its first week of release, according to new data from The title distributed by eOne sold 37,000 Blu-ray Disc units to lead all high-definition releases as well, according to Cue Entertainment.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s 47 Ronin landed in the second spot, selling 76,000 discs in its first week of release. In fourth was The Railway Man (Lionsgate), followed in order by American Hustle (EiV); Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (Paramount Home Media Distribution); The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Lionsgate); The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Warner Home Video); newcomer Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (Paramount), which sold 19,000 units; and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment).
Perennial chart topper Frozen finished third with 50,000 discs sold after seven weeks on the charts. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s animated blockbuster has sold 1.76 million discs to lead year-to-date British video sales, followed by Desolation of Smaug with 1 million units, and Catching Fire with 810,000 units.
