Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's first 2016 release of its successful direct-to-video “Barbie” franchise will be Barbie: Spy Squad on Digital HD Feb. 9 and Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD) on March 1 for $22.98.
The 76-minute story revolves around Barbie and her friends Teresa and Renee transforming themselves from hard-working gymnasts to undercover secret agents. The combo pack includes bonus "Strength in Numbers" music video outtakes.
Since securing rights (previously distributed by Lionsgate) from Mattel in 2010, Universal has released more than a half-dozen titles. Recent releases Barbie & Her Sisters in The Great Puppy Adventure (Oct. 27, 2015) and Barbie and the Secret Door (Sept. 16, 2014) generated nearly $9 million in combined DVD/Blu-ray Disc domestic unit sales, according to The-Numbers.com.
Secret Door tracked $1.69 million in ticket sales during a limited international theatrical release. Barbie in Rock 'N Royals launched at retail last September, with Target offering a free mini doll with purchase.
