ABI: Samsung Leads in TVs, Nintendo for Games

17 Mar, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey

Through the first three quarters of 2010 Samsung Electronics led all consumer electronics companies with nearly 20% of the flat-panel HDTV market, according to a new report from ABI Research.

LG Electronics was second with roughly 15% market share.

“Flat-panel television unit shipments were up overall; plasma did remarkably well and LED growth continued, but consumers continued to be relatively sensitive to price despite new features such as Internet connectivity and 3D,” said analyst Michael Inouye.

As for gaming, through 2010 Nintendo led the way, with more than 85 million total Wiis sold, ABI reported. However, year-over-year shipments of both gaming consoles and portable game players were down 3% and 30%, respectively.

“There was likely some impact from mobile gaming, but right now a big part of these declining numbers can be attributed to consumers waiting for the next generation of equipment,” said Jason Blackwell, practice director for ABI.

Both Sony and Nintendo have new portable gaming systems slated for release this year.
