Nintendo Consoles Top Previous Sales Records

4 Jan, 2011 By: Ashley Ratcliff

2010 ended on a high note for Nintendo.

The Nintendo DS family of handheld video game systems has sold more than 47 million units in the United States since the original version launched in November 2004, making it the best-selling gaming system of all time.

In addition to that record, last year marked the third consecutive year that U.S. sales of the Wii home gaming system surpassed 7 million units. According to Nintendo’s internal figures, more than 34 million Wii systems have been sold in the country to date.

“When we look back at 2010, we see consumers time and again turning to the value and enjoyment of our products,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America. “When we look ahead to 2011, we see new portable technology and more great Wii games that need to be seen to be believed.”

In March, Nintendo is slated to launch its Nintendo 3DS handheld system, which allows players to view 3D content sans special glasses.
