Former home entertainment executive successfully ran consumer products and studio distribution

The Walt Disney Co. Feb. 23 announced it has named Bob Chapek chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts, replacing Tom Staggs, who recently became COO of Disney.

Chapek, who ran Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and was president of distribution at Walt Disney Studios until being named head of Disney Consumer Products in 2011, continues to report directly to CEO Bob Iger.

A successor to Chapek at Consumer Products will be named at a later date.

“Under Bob’s leadership, Consumer Products has seen great success, focusing on brands and a franchise-driven strategy while launching new products and retail experiences that combine technological innovation and creativity,” Iger said in a statement. “He is an experienced and versatile executive well-suited to lead Parks and Resorts into the future.”

Staggs, who was named COO Feb. 5, said Chapek is stepping into this role at an “incredibly dynamic and exciting time” for Parks and Resorts. Chapek assumes the position as Disney finishes construction of Shanghai Disney Resort as well as the new Avatar-themed land at Walt Disney World.

“I am grateful for the many opportunities I have had during my years at Disney, and am thrilled to join the incredible Disney Parks organization,” Chapek said in a statement.
