Netflix Ups Italian Presence With Telecom Partnership

20 Jun, 2017 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Looking to jumpstart subscriber growth in Italy, Netflix has partnered with national telecom Wind Tre, including the subscription streaming video service in standalone video packages.

The telecom is offering Netflix, along with a router and Google Chromecast for €15/month ($16.70). A separate program includes 50GB of data costs €24.95/month ($27.77).

"The agreement with Netflix strengthens our commitment to digital oriented solutions that make technology simple and intuitive,” Valerio Marra, consumer director of Wind Tre, said in a statement.

Since launching Italian service in 2015, Netflix reportedly has about 200,000 subscribers. The relatively low sub count has been attributed to a dearth of local content — a reality Netflix is working on.

This year, Netflix releases its first original Italian series, 10-episode organized-crime drama “Suburra.”

Regardless, Marra said Netflix is a proven innovator among millennials and consumers opting out of traditional pay-TV.

“We strive to offer innovative services … with a brand that stands out for the values of transparency, innovation and technology at affordable prices for everyone,” he said.
