Korean pop music is a huge phenomenon not only in South Korea, but worldwide. Appealing mostly to teens, K-pop is a combination of various Western genres, including pop, rock and hip-hop, as well as Japanese pop music.
Korean record label SM Entertainment is home to many of K-pop’s highly produced boy bands and girl bands. The label puts out summer and winter albums dubbed “SMTown” and featuring current artists.
I AM gives fans a comprehensive look at the world tour of K-pop artists Kangta, BoA, TVXQ!, Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, Shinee and f(x).
The first disc is a feature-length documentary of interviews, rehearsal and backstage footage, audition takes, and full songs from various concerts with the artists. The artists talk about memories of being with the band, sometimes even while watching years-old audition footage of themselves.
The second disc is full of extras, some a little more in-depth, such as a featurette about TVXQ!, a making-of music video and a featurette with the artists talking about the tour and the film during a press conference. Others are just more fun such as the artists saying what their favorite colors are and a video diary from their New York stop on the tour.
The last two discs contain the concert from the SMTown tour’s stop in Madison Square Garden in 2011.
The film is well shot, looking as sleek as the artists it portrays. For anyone into K-pop this surely must be a goldmine, with its hours and hours of concert and off-stage footage from these energetic SM Entertainment artists.
