Get Ready for Reaper 2

16 Jul, 2010 By: Billy Gil

Home Media Magazine and the horror site DreadCentral.com are again partnering to present the second annual Reaper Awards, honoring horror on home video.

“The Grimmys” will be awarded to the best horror DVDs and Blu-ray Discs of the year at the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel Oct. 12, 2010.

“We’re ready for a sequel, following a successful event in 2009,” says Stephanie Prange, the event’s executive producer and editor in chief of Home Media Magazine. “There’s nothing scarier than watching a horror movie at home on disc with the lights out, and we aim to honor that tradition.”

From a pool of studio-submitted titles released in the past year, a panel of esteemed judges from the horror community will choose nominees in eight categories, based on the quality of the films and how they are presented on home video. Horror fans will have the opportunity to choose the following “Grimmy” winners in an online consumer vote slated for Aug. 30 to Oct. 1 at www.ReaperAwards.com:

• Best Theatrical Title
• Best Blu-ray Disc
• Best Direct-to-Video Title
• Best Packaging
• Best Boxed Set/TV Series Set
• Best Catalog Title
• Best Indie/Foreign
• Best HD Transfer

The panel of judges will select a Best of Show winner from among all submissions. In addition, consumers can vote in special categories to pick the titles most anticipated for the fourth quarter.

Horror experts participating as judges include: Home Media Magazine’s publisher Thomas K. Arnold, and reviews and AgentDVD.com editor John Latchem; Steve “Uncle Creepy” Barton from DreadCentral.com; Brad “Mr. Disgusting” Miska of Bloody-Disgusting.com; ShockTillYouDrop.com’s Ryan Turek aka “Ryan Rotten”; Staci Wilson of Horror.com; Lawrence Raffel of Fearnet.com; and a special celebrity judge — independent filmmaker/producer/legend Roger Corman.

Corman’s career ranks as one of Hollywood’s most amazing success stories. Having produced more than 350 films and directed 50 others, his influence on American film goes far beyond his own creative low-budget movies. Noted for his keen ability to spot young talent, Corman has fostered such movie legends as Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford Coppola, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Ron Howard, Peter Fonda, Jonathan Demme, Gale Anne Hurd, Diane Ladd, Tommy Lee Jones, Sandra Bullock, Bruce Dern, Talia Shire, Charles Bronson, Joe Dante, Peter Bogdanovich and Sally Kirkland. In 2009 he was the recipient of an honorary Academy Award for his contribution to the medium of film.

Corman’s cult-classic films are being re-released on DVD and Blu-ray as part of the “Roger Corman’s Cult Classics” line from Shout! Factory and Vivendi Entertainment.
