‘Guild’ Creators Unveil ‘Geek & Sundry’ YouTube Channel

19 Mar, 2012 By: John Latchem

Geek icon Felicia Day and the team behind the hit Web series “The Guild” have expanded their efforts into a new premium YouTube channel, dubbed Geek & Sundry, with original programming slated to begin April 2.

Day and some of her collaborators were on hand at WonderCon March 17 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif., to unveil some of the new Web series to be available on the channel (), exploring comedy, gaming, comic books, music and literature. Geek & Sundry will also provide a social destination and community for fans to connect online and offline about nerd culture worldwide.

Among the shows debuting April 2:

• “The Flog” — a vlog in which Day explores quirky new hobbies and shares experiences that connect her with her favorite people, in person as well as across the Web. New episodes will be available every Monday.

• “Dark Horse Motion Comics” — fan-favorite franchises such as “Hellboy,” “The Goon” and “The Umbrella Academy” will be presented using new motion graphic techniques. The April 2 launch features Mike Richardson’s 40-minute horror epic The Secret. New episodes will be available every Wednesday.

• “TableTop” — Wil Wheaton hosts this “Celebrity Poker” meets “Dinner for Five”-type show that pairs notable celebs with tabletop games such as Settlers of Catan to card games such as Fluxx or role-playing games such as Dragon Age. New episodes will be available every other Friday.

Other shows will include:

• “The Guild” — Last year’s fifth season, recently released on DVD, will be presented at Geek & Sundry starting April 10, with episodes available every Tuesday.

• “Sword & Laser” — This book club podcast, hosted by Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt, premieres April 13, with new episodes airing every other Friday. The show will feature interviews with top authors, reviews and sci-fi and fantasy books, and a discussion of the essential news of the week.

• “Written by a Kid” — Premiering July 18, with new episodes every Wednesday, this anthology offers original sci-fi, fantasy and horror stories written by real kids and transformed into digital short films.

• “Learning Town” — Fall 2012 will see the debut of this offbeat musical featuring nerd music duo Paul & Storm blending vocal harmonies with comedic scenarios as they are tasked with reviving the flagging educational show of their childhoods, in the face of adversity from villainous hipsters, cantankerous ghosts and flammable puppets.

The “Geek & Sundry” YouTube announcement panel at WonderCon included (L-R) Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Comics, and Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt of “Sword and Laser.”
