‘Superman: Unbound’ to Premiere at WonderCon

19 Mar, 2013 By: John Latchem

The latest DC Universe direct-to-video animated superhero movie, Superman: Unbound, will get a world premiere March 29 at this year’s WonderCon.

Warner Home Video releases Superman: Unbound on DVD ($19.98), Blu-ray ($24.98) and digital download May 7.

The ‘PG-13’-rated adventure is based on the 2008 Superman: Brainiac comic book by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank. The story finds the Man of Steel handling day-to-day crime in Metropolis while balancing his attempt to acclimate Supergirl to Earth and his relationship with Lois Lane. Meanwhile, the planet is threatened by Brainiac, the malevolent force responsible for the destruction of Superman’s home world of Krypton. Brainiac has bottled cities from many planets, including Supergirl’s home of Kandor, and looks to add Metropolis to his collection.

Voice talent includes Matt Bomer (“White Collar”) as Superman, John Noble (“Fringe”) as Brainiac, and “Castle” stars Stana Katic as Lois Lane and Molly Quinn as Supergirl. Supervising producer James Tucker directs the film from a script by Bob Goodman.

The Blu-ray combo pack includes the film on Blu-ray, DVD and UltraViolet, plus bonus material including a “Kandor: History of the Bottle City” featurette, a “Brainiac: Technology and Terror” featurette, an audio commentary with members of the creative team, four bonus episodes of “Superman: The Animated Series” and a preview of the Superman: Brainiac digital comic.

WonderCon, an annual pop culture convention from the organization behind the San Diego Comic-Con International, this year runs from March 29 to 31 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. The Superman: Unbound premiere will be held during the Friday programs from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Arena.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Gary Miereanu, with filmmakers and voice talent, as well as exclusive prizes and potential glimpses into future DCU animated films.

This is the second straight year Warner has debuted an animated Superman film at WonderCon, having screened Superman vs. the Elite at the 2012 event.
